– Louis de Bernières (quote reblogged via kari-shma)
A friend, who posts here, chose this piece to read at my wedding, except she omitted the part about mating and kissing every cranny. I just read it now in its full glory and felt delighted. Her edit was perfect for my wedding; this version...

J.D. Salinger Dies at Age 91
Photo reblogged from Salon.com.
I only just read that J.D. Salinger died yesterday. Hello, NPR, where was that on my morning commute? My first reaction, though, was to think, He was still alive? Oops. Maybe now it’s finally time to read Franny and Zooey.
For a history of J.D.’s love life, since that’s what we whisper about around here, check out “J.D. Salinger’s...

Married to Ozzy
Is there one thing [Ozzy] regrets the most? “The way I treated my first wife [Thelma]. I was young, I was drinking, using drugs, — I was a rock ‘n’ roll star and I thought that gave me a license to be an a—hole to some degree,” he says. “I thought I was just being cool and that’s just what we all do, but I got married way too young and I had...

Promise Cross
Driving home tonight I was transported to a far off memory. Madonna’s ‘Take a Bow’ played on the radio, and I remembered a forgotten summer and a wooden cross necklace splashed with white paint …
When I crossed the swinging bridge with my suitcase, I spotted him sitting alone at the top of a small cliff, blond hair falling over his pale face while he wrote in a...

Birthday Request
My birthday is coming up soon, but in the interest of being anonymous I’m not going to say which day. Between now and the end of February, I was wondering if you’d send me an email or a post as a birthday present.
Please write down one of the happiest moments of your life—not like your wedding day or the day your child was born—go for moments. Was it something he...

Poll: To Spit or Swallow, is this the question?
My jaw just dropped when I read that Alisa swallows. I’m not sure why, other than it’s not something I’ve thought about since I was fifteen. I just sort of made my decision and stuck with it, and that decision was “oh hell no.” Then I saw that Chris Rock show about a year ago where he said something like happy marriages are the ones where she swallows, and the ones...

Going Down
Alisa Bowman, who posts here and writes a great blog called ‘The Happily Ever After Project,’ posted two quite amazing articles—one for going down on men, the other for going down on women. They are brave and fascinating and I had to share them.
For advice on going down on you choose this link.

Saying No
I’m getting better at saying no, even to things that matter. Because regardless of how much something matters, I just don’t have the time to do everything. In the past, as long as there was a moment free on my calendar, I’d try to fit in the extra request.
- Oprah in the February 2010 issue of O Magazine
I think it might be the year of learning to say no for me. I was...

These Boots Were Made for Kicking
I’m wearing my boots out into the world today, and I have to say that they feel gooood. Really good. I feel like I could kick somebody’s ass in these boots, like literally walk up and kick somebody in the butt. They’re that good.
Just coincidentally, there’s an ass out there that I’d like to kick today. John Edwards, I’m coming for you. She’s your...

The Belly
I looked at my belly in the bathtub today and it occurred to me that it’s like when a third cousin comes to visit. I have to be nice to her because she’s family, but I’ll be so glad when she’s gone.

Modern Marriage: The Rise of the Sugar Mama
Check out ‘Modern Marriage: The Rise of the Sugar Mama’ by Jennifer Ludden on NPR.
My husband and I were watching “Up in the Air” with his parents when we encountered one of those strange, uncomfortable moments. Vera Farmiga’s character tells a young woman that she should look for a man that makes more money than her because in the long run it’s less stress....

Today is the last full day that my in-laws are in town and, despite my husband and I still being really snotty sick with colds, we gave in to their departing wish … to go to Designer Shoe Warehouse. Secret Twenty-Six, Revealed. GO TO DSW TODAY FOR THE MOST AMAZING SALE EVER.
I’m not kidding. Bundle up and go out in the crappy weather right this minute and you will not have to go...

To Have and to Hold . . . and a Baby?
Photo reblogged from Mothering.com.
A friend of mine once asked her mother how a couple knows when the time is right to have children. Her mother said, “When your heart is so full of love for each other that it spills over, creating another person.” I’ve always loved that.
I think I might be ready to start thinking about having children except that my husband really...

Little Pick-Me-Ups
Photo reblogged from Chain Reading.
I know three things for sure about my anxieties:
1. If I make a To Do list when I start to feel anxious then immediately set about crossing things off, I usually feel better within the hour.
2. My anxiety is closely linked to hunger. Just before lunch or dinner is when I’m most likely to have a meltdown, especially if I’ve skipped breakfast or...

Dance of Shame
Photo delightfully reblogged from Vintage Dresses.
Today I put on a pair of pants. Then I put on a skirt. Then I put on a different pair of pants in what I have decided to call the Dance of Shame. My belly doesn’t fit. Damn. I’m sure I’d have issue with my butt, too, if I could get a good look at it as I leap into the air while tugging my jeans by their belt loops. I guess...

Sweet Revenge
Photo reblogged from Little Sacred Space.
CNN World reports:
China faces 24M bride shortage by 2020
Some 24 million Chinese men of marrying age will find themselves lacking wives in 2020, partly because of the country’s one-child policy, which has led to the abortion of female fetuses, state media said Monday.
Hmm, the culture values men so much more than women that parents abort...

Poll: A Spoonful of Sugar and . . .
Finally buying a dishwasher this year did wonders for my marriage. I’d go so far as to call it the Wonder Bra of Married Life. What does wonders for your marriage? I know the answer is obviously “All of the Above” in this poll, but I’m going to force you to pick just one. If you choose “Other” then tell us what it is in the Comments section. For the Love of Farmer Pete
“People in [nurturing] professions tend to have caring natures and it is natural for them to be the nurturers in their own relationships. They give and give — but they may not get much in return.”

Follow-up on New Year's Resolutions
Nine days in and how am I doing …
Talls instead of grandes, 6 talls and 2 grandes (but the 2 mistakes were when I forgot rather than just being bad).
Yoga, Not yet but the in-laws have been in town since January 2nd so I’d say it is okay to start once they’ve left.
Walks, 3 and they were all forced because of this resolution so good for me!

Call Me Crazy
You know how sometimes a friend says something that confirms exactly why you’re friends? In an email today from The Professor’s Daughter, she said:
P.S. I’ve changed [ex-boyfriend]’s name in my cell phone to “Crazy.”
This P.S. almost made me pee my pants with laughter. I love it that the next time Crazy comes calling she won’t pick up. I also love it...

Kid quote of the day
Delightfully reblogged from piafmunchkin:
(*Before break, I had a conversation with one of our problem 4-year-olds at naptime, about how sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do. I referenced the fact that I sometimes don’t want to clean my house, but I have to, and sometimes I don’t want to wash the dishes, but I have to. This stuck with her, and she’s brought it up several times...

My husband and I have had a long two years of being at odds. Rachel Griffiths’ character in “Brothers and Sisters” (Season Two, I...
